By liking your page you have been given permission to push your message and content to members of your page. How a humongous garbage patch in the Pacific breeds new bugs (+video)

The great Pacific garbage patch has created a new breeding ground for a marine insect, which in turn is changing Pacific ecosystems.?

The great Pacific garbage patch is giving sea striders a place to breed out on the open ocean, changing the natural environment there, new research suggests.

Skip to next paragraph The average American throws away three and a half pounds of trash each day. You may be surprised that some of that is ending up in the ocean, with much going to what is called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. At twice the size of Texas, one woman has made cleaning this vast space her mission.

The great Pacific garbage patch, known to scientists as the?North Pacific Subtropial Gyre, is a large patch of mulched up plastic and other garbage, often said to be the size of Texas, floating in the Pacific Ocean.

"This paper shows a dramatic increase in plastic over a relatively short time period and the effect it's having on a common North Pacific Gyre invertebrate," study researcher Miriam Goldstein, graduate student at the University of California San Diego, said in a statement. "We're seeing changes in this marine insect that can be directly attributed to the plastic."

The sea strider,?Halobates sericeus, is related to?pond striders?seen in freshwater lakes. It usually lays its eggs on floating objects in the ocean, like seashells, seabird feathers, tar lumps and pumice. The researchers compared recently collected plastic to that collected in 1972 under a microscope.

They found that the number of pieces of plastic less than 0.2 inches (5 millimeters) in diameter increased about 100 times over the past 40 years. They also found that these tiny plastic pieces gave sea striders more room to lay their eggs, leading to much higher densities of the invertebrate in?the garbage patch.

By giving these insects a place to breed out on the open ocean, the plastic patch is changing the natural environment and could be having an impact on the local food web, the researchers said. This is exactly what they've been worried about, Goldstein said. [Video: Humans Hit the Oceans Hard]

"It's a general pattern throughout the ocean that the animals that live on hard surfaces are different than the animals that live on soft surfaces, or in the water column. All this plastic has added a lot of hard surfaces to an ecosystem that historically has very few," Goldstein told LiveScience in an email.

This could be a "good" thing for the insect's main predator, crabs, increasing their numbers ? but such a large change could?disrupt the oceanic food web, the researchers said. And the items that the insect eats, including tiny animals like zooplankton and fish eggs, could take a big population hit.

The garbage patch community seems to have a very low amount of biodiversity, Goldstein said, which isn't a great thing: "We're concerned that this might change the flow of energy in this ecosystem, potentially favoring the low-biodiversity rafting community at the expense of the high-biodiversity water column community."

The study will be published May 9 in the journal Biology Letters.

Samsung expands list for Android 4.0 upgrade

Samsung has expanded its list of devices that are set to receive the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update. The list now includes several T-Mobile devices, including the Galaxy S Blaze 4G, Galaxy S II, Galaxy Tab 7.0, and the Galaxy Tab 10.1. However, when the upgrade will arrive for those devices have yet to be revealed, and the list will continually be altered as updates are confirmed or released.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich has so far only been available for Samsung?s Nexus S 4G on the Now Network and will soon be available for the Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch on the same carrier. For AT&T, the Galaxy S II, Galaxy S II Skyrocket, Galaxy Note, Captivate Glide, and the Galaxy Tab 8.9 will be receiving the upgrade.

Both the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 7.7 on Verizon will also be getting the ICS update as will the WiFi versions of Samsung?s tablets, including the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, Galaxy Tab 8.9, and the Galaxy Tab 10.1.

TSA finds gun parts, ammo hidden in stuffed toys

Federal transportation officials found gun components and ammunition hidden inside three stuffed animals carried by a passenger at Rhode Island's T.F. Green Airport. WHDH-TV's Victoria Warren reports.

Story updated at 12:45 p.m. ET -- Gun components and ammunition were found?hidden inside three stuffed animals carried by a passenger at Rhode Island's T.F. Green Airport on Tuesday, federal transportation officials said.

Authorities later allowed the 4-year-old boy and his father to continue their travel to Detroit after concluding the man didn't pose a risk, authorities said. The man, who's identity has not been released, told police that he didn't know the parts were inside the stuffed toys -- which included a?Mickey Mouse and a teddy bear.

"After extensively interviewing the father and conducting the follow-up investigation, it was determined that this case involved a domestic custody dispute, and there was no threat to aviation safety," Patty Goldstein, spokesperson for?Rhode Island Airport Corporation, said in a statement obtained by msnbc.com.

The case is being investigated by the Rhode Island Airport Police, FBI and Rhode Island State Police, the statement said.?

NBC News station WHDH reported?that a magazine loaded with two .40-caliber rounds was discovered?inside a bunny and a firing pin was inside Mickey Mouse.

A?TSA officer noticed the disassembled gun components "artfully concealed" inside three stuffed animals. The stuffed animals were inside the child's carry-on bag, which had been put through an X-ray machine as part of normal security screening.

Passengers at T.F. Green had mixed reactions, WHDH reported.

?I just can?t imagine anybody letting him continue on his trip without getting answers to the questions: What was he thinking? Why was he doing that? And for the officials to sit back and say, ?Could he have posed a danger?? And if he could, why are we letting him move on to potentially do it again?? one man said.

Another traveler said security measures are clearly working.

"I know a lot of people don't like the screening procedure, but I'm thankful that they really screen people and we feel much safer because of it," the woman told WHDH.
