NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) ? The Huffington Post is launching its own 24-hour live cable news network for the web, TheWrap has confirmed.
Forbes' Jeff Bercovici reported Tuesday that the AOL Huffington Post Media Group "is preparing to launch" the Huffington Post Streaming Network (akin in some respects to a CNN for the web), and a source close to the matter verified that the details of his report were accurate.
Bercovici wrote that HuffPost is expected to use its staff of more than 300 journalists for the initiative, and will expose viewers to everything from editorial meetings to breaking news analysis.
A major announcement is slated for February 2 in New York.
This marks but the latest prominent media company trying its hand at television online.
Yahoo has unveiled a bevy of original programming for its Yahoo Screen vertical, while everyone from Reuters to Vice has signed up with YouTube to curate their own channels of original content.
Web TV is proving to be lucrative territory for these companies because of the advertising potential.

BEIJING ? China will be more open about the often secretive workings of the government and ruling Communist Party in the coming year, although strict controls over the Internet would remain in place, a senior propaganda official said Wednesday.
Officials will expand the use of government spokespeople, boost the overseas reach of state media, and further promote the use of microblogs to interact with the public, Wang Chen told reporters.
"In this new year, we will adopt an even more open attitude and even more forceful policies," Wang said.
Chinese government departments have traditionally been tightlipped, a result of authoritarian one-party rule in which officials had little accountability to the public and policies were drafted in high-level meetings without input from ordinary citizens.
However, amid rising incomes and increased demand for transparency and efficiency, departments over the past decade have appointed spokesmen to deal with media and the general public, and released an increasing flow of information.
Wang said news and information about government's day-to-day activities as well as emergency responses would be expanded and systematized. Spokesmen would receive intensified training with an emphasis on obtaining first-hand information rather than simply passing on information from other departments, he said.
Much of that public interaction has been driven by the Internet, and government departments at all levels now have not only websites but also Twitter-like microblogs on which to post breaking news. China has more people online than any other country ? 513 million ? nearly 360 million of whom primarily access the web over their cell phones and almost half of whom use microblogs.
The explosive growth of such services has underscored government efforts to rigorously police the Internet for content promoting fraud, gambling, pornography or content considered politically sensitive information.
China also blocks major social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter out of fear they could be used to spread subversive content, or to organize public demonstrations such as those that spread last spring across the Arab world.
Webmasters, pro-democracy activists, and journalists who have posted sensitive information on the Internet have been harassed, detained, and in some cases imprisoned.
Wang said the government would compel those opening new microblog accounts in Beijing and other major cities to use their real names and other information. The requirement would later be expanded to cover those with existing accounts, he said.
Free speech advocates have called that an attempt to further curtail online discussions. Wang said it was necessary to prevent fraud, identity theft and the spread of rumors or other "harmful information."
"Our only purpose is to ensure the rapid, healthy expansion of the Chinese Internet," he said.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - The Costa Concordia cruise ship still sits like a beached whale off the coast of Italy after running aground on Friday. Six bodies have been recovered and 16 people remain unaccounted for.
Monday, a Virginia Beach couple returned home from the beached cruise ship.
Karen Kennedy and Rick Langlands said nothing at the airport except they were happy to be home. Kennedy was set to do an interview tonight on Rock Center with Brian Williams, but had to cancel because of the anxiety from the tragedy at sea.
The accident has travel agents bracing for a possible drop-off in cruise ship reservations. This time of year is big for cruises and what happened to the Costa Concordia certainly doesn't help.
"It's such a bizarre tragedy," Travel Agent Elizabeth Psimas said. Psimas, who has been in the industry for 27 years, has never seen anything like this before. Never.
"Ferry boats capsizing in third world countries, maybe, but you don't see cruise ship accidents of this magnitude anymore," Psimas said.
Psimas said the accident is a huge reminder of the importance of carrying travel insurance, especially if you bought your trip online.
"Who are you calling if something goes wrong if you bought the cruise online? When you buy insurance you have someone fighting for you...getting your insurance lined up...they help get you a passport, lost money, lost credit cards. Travel insurance makes sure everything will be taken care of," Psimas explained.
Travel insurance costs between five and seven percent of the cost of the cruise line tickets or the cost of any trip.
Psimas is shocked the ship captain, who is now under arrest for manslaughter, left the ship and the lack of organization on the part of the ship's crew leaves her dismayed.
"Nobody was taking names. People are still listed as missing that are possibly fine," Psimas said.
The cruise liner running aground will cost its owner Carnival up to $95 million, with the company's insurance provider covering $30 million of that total. Captain error has been deemed as the cause of the crash.
The Costa Concordia is also now an environmental crisis. Winds have picked up and the ship will likely dump fuel in the waters off Tuscany. The Environmental Minister estimates 500,000 gallons of fuel could begin leaking.

LONDON ? Britain's prime minister says Queen Elizabeth II will not be getting public funding for a new royal yacht to mark her Diamond Jubilee.
David Cameron's spokesman said Monday it would not be "appropriate" to use taxpayer funds for that purpose.
But Cameron's office has not ruled out the possibility of helping Buckingham Palace to secure private sector funding, if royal officials decide that the queen needs a new vessel.
The issue was raised by Education Secretary Michael Gove. He said in a letter leaked to the press that a new yacht would be an ideal gift to mark the queen's 60th year on the throne.
It is estimated that a new yacht would cost at least 60 million pounds ($92 million).
The Royal Yacht Britannia was decommissioned in 1997.
