How Can I Drive Safely in Extreme Winter Weather? [Ask Lifehacker]

How Can I Drive Safely in Extreme Winter Weather?Dear Lifehacker,

Where I live, snow just covered the entire city but I still need to get to work. Are there ways I drive safely in extreme Winter weather, or should I just cross my fingers and hope I don't die?

Sincerely,
Snowed Out

Dear Snowed,

Winter driving sucks. I grew up in Minneapolis, then moved to Boston, and so I've been through some rough conditions on foot and in the car. Aside from the obvious things, like driving more slowly and paying attention, there are a few tips you can implement to make your commute a bit safer.

Preparation

Get Your Car in Top Shape

If you haven't been in for a tune-up already, now's the time to go. If your car is going to withstand slippery snow and ice, you want to give it the best chance possible. If anything isn't in perfect working order?your brakes, especially?you're at greater risk than you need to be. You should be keeping your car in optimal condition anyway. Winter is just a good excuse to make the effort.

Know Which Streets Get Plowed First

Your city will be plowing the streets so they're safe for driving, but they can't all be plowed at the same time. Streets with a higher volume of traffic, as well as highways, are often prioritized. If you check with your local Department of Transportation web site you can often find a plowing schedule during the Winter. If not, check local news to find out which routes are currently safest. If you can't find any information, picking popular streets is often your best bet for the previously mentioned reasons. If no streets are in great condition when you have to drive, consider calling your office and see if you can work from home until conditions are safe. You shouldn't be on the road if can't drive safely.

Brake Before Turning

According to the automotive experts at Edmunds, one major cause of slipping around on the road is taking turns too quickly. We have a tendency to brake as we turn, which works well enough on a dry road, but it might come a little too late during the Winter. Instead, brake before you turn so you ensure you're taking the turn at a slow enough speed. Additionally, it's a good practice to brake a little earlier than usual anyhow as you may skid whether you're turning or not. Giving yourself a little more time to recover and brake successfully can mean the difference between a safe stop and an accident.

Keep a Greater Following Distance

If you look at drivers on the road at any time of the year, you'll find very few people keeping the safe following distance we were instructed to keep in order to avoid slamming on the brakes and, in some cases, into the back of another driver's vehicle. During the Winter, that safe following distance should be extended because you'll need the extra time to brake. This may feel a little excessive at times, and impatient drivers might not enjoy the extra space you're creating, but it's definitely better to create enough room to come to a safe, complete stop than to wind up in a crash.

When Skidding, Avoid Target Fixation (and Your Instincts)

How Can I Drive Safely in Extreme Winter Weather?According to Edmunds, one major Winter driving problem is really more of a problem with your brain. When you start skidding, you start to panic and fixate on a target?like another car?and find it difficult to actually take the necessary measures to avoid an accident. While Edmunds recommends hands-on, professional instruction at a school designed to help you drive better in the Winter, they consulted driving instructor Jerry Pearl to offer some general suggestions for controlling a skid:

"You have to go against your natural tendencies," he says. "Turn into the skid. You also need to accelerate." That last piece of advice seems to freak people out the most, he admits. "People don't think about accelerating to control the car." However, many oversteer skids can be controlled and a disaster averted simply by releasing the brake and gently accelerating. This transfers the weight from the front to the rear wheels, which allows you to steer into the direction of the skid, gain control of the vehicle and continue safely on your way. If you drive a rear-wheel-drive vehicle, cautions Pearl, be careful not to over-accelerate or the tires may spin and you will oversteer and slide out of the turn. In an understeer skid (when your car refuses to turn and is sliding), once again it's important not to react instinctively by over-correcting the steering wheel, by braking or by doing both simultaneously. Understeering is usually caused by entering a corner too quickly and then turning. To turn the vehicle effectively, your wheels need grip. If you react to an understeer skid by turning more, you're only asking for more grip, which is unavailable. The same is true if you brake. Instead, Pearl advises, in an understeer skid, carefully adjust your steering wheel until you regain some grip at the front wheels. Once grip is restored, gently and precisely add steering.

These are complicated techniques that can require a bit of practice, so keeping them in mind is probably not going to help much in the few seconds you have to avoid an accident. If you can locate a Winter driving class in your area, you might want to take it. It'll be cheaper and more convenient than an accident.

Keep Useful Items in Your Trunk

How Can I Drive Safely in Extreme Winter Weather? No matter how well you attempt to handle the Winter weather, accidents happen so it's best to be prepared by keeping useful tools in the trunk. The Weather Channel recommends a shovel, bag of salt (or cat litter) for melting snow faster, an ice scraper or snow brush, and additional warm clothing items like heavy woolen mittens, socks, hats, and blankets (in case your car breaks down and you have to wait in the cold). I'd also add that a first aid kit can be useful, as well as jumper cables. Your car battery isn't a fan of cold weather either, so best to be ready in case it dies out.

PFT: Giants' Tuck says the Falcons play dirty

San Diego Chargers v Jacksonville JaguarsGetty Images

In the end, Chargers president Dean Spanos has decided to love the ones he?s with.

Amid rampant reports of sweeping changes in San Diego, the team has announced that coach Norv Turner and G.M. A.J. Smith will return in 2012.

?Bottom line, I believe these two men give us the best chance to get back to the playoffs,? Spanos said in a team-issued statement. ?A.J. Smith is the best man to improve our roster, and Norv Turner is the best man to lead that roster on the field.

?Together, we have stability and experience that?s hard to find in the NFL.? They?ve both been in this league a long time.? I don?t think there is anything they haven?t seen or experienced.? They?ve led us through some difficult situations.

?As we?ve seen throughout Norv?s tenure and particularly this past season, the players believe in him, respect him and play hard for him.? When we went through that tough stretch, no one quit.? The team kept playing hard, and that?s a tribute to Norv?s leadership and the respect the players have for him.

?Now we will take a hard look at everything, from player evaluation to coaching to the rash of injuries we?ve suffered in recent years.? Injuries have killed us.? And no one is ever perfect in this business.? Player evaluation isn?t an exact science.? We need to improve across the board and I?m going to make sure we do.

?We all have our quirks and faults, but I want A.J. and Norv on my side.? They are the right men to help us win a championship.?

Possible Translation?? ?I know they?re both a little goofy.? But If I would have fired these guys, there?s no guarantee I would have gotten anyone better.?

And let?s not be naive.? Spanos undoubtedly gauged the interest of guys like Bill Cowher and/or Jon Gruden, who would have infused excitement, sold tickets, and ultimately helped lay the foundation for a new stadium.? Presumably, both men politely said no and thanks.

Without a chance to land a superstar coach, Spanos apparently opted not to clean house, paying Turner for two years and Smith for three and news guys going forward who may not do any better.

Let?s also be extra-cynical.? Maybe Spanos actually wants to move the team to Los Angeles.? What better way to do it than to make a move (or, more accurately, not make a move) that will be horribly unpopular with the fan base?

Pope's Mexico itinerary leaves out capital

(AP)? MEXICO CITY ? Pope Benedict XVI will head to the Catholic-rich state of Guanajuato in his first visit to Mexico in March, and skip the country's heavily populated capital.

The Mexican Episcopal Conference says Benedict will arrive on March 23 in the city of Leon where President Felipe Calderon will welcome him.

The organization said in a Sunday statement that Benedict also plans to greet worshippers in the city of Guanajuato.

He will officiate a Mass in the city of Silao beneath a hill where a 67-foot statue of Jesus Christ stands.

The pope will return to Leon to address bishops from Mexico, Latin America and the Caribbean before heading to Cuba on March 26.

The Vatican had said Benedict would avoid Mexico City because of its high altitude although it's the country's biggest city.

How do you get into the mayor's office on steamworks island?

Answer:

?

Once you have the multi-tool from the Clockwork Cantina (big gears go at the top and bottom), throw the lever to extend the bridge to the roof. Use the hot air vents to throw you across to the right side of the roof, and open the skylight using the multi-tool.

The Legal Brief: The New Paradigm

Attorney David Perlman argues that recent years have given rise to a? new paradigm for legal briefs:

The new paradigm has five essential

elements. A brief should state a theme

at the outset; relay the facts through

a flowing, engaging story, creating

an initial impression of who should

prevail; zero in on the essential legal

authority, yet, at the same time, anchor

legal argument to underlying policies

and principles; display a literary style

that is relaxed, conversational, and nonpedantic;

and appeal to the eye.
