Obama plays up auto industry success story

(AP) ? President Barack Obama wears his decision to rescue General Motors and Chrysler three years ago as a badge of honor, a move to save jobs in an industry that helped create the backbone of the middle class more than a half-century ago.

For Obama, the auto bailout is a case study for his efforts to revive the economy and a potential point of contrast with Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney, who opposed Obama's decision to pour billions of dollars into the auto companies. If Romney wins the Republican nomination, expect to hear a lot about the car industry.

"The American auto industry was on the verge of collapse. And some politicians were willing to let it just die. We said no," Obama told college students last week in Ann Arbor, Michigan. "We believe in the workers of this state."

Obama was expected to visit the Washington Auto Show on Tuesday, giving him another forum to talk about GM and Chrysler, along with the administration's attention to manufacturers and efforts to boost fuel efficiency standards. The White House has taken every opportunity to highlight its efforts to rebuild the auto industry, pointing to GM's reemergence as the world's largest automaker and job growth and profitability in the U.S. auto industry.

The president's campaign views the auto storyline as a potent argument against Romney ? who, even though he is the son of a Detroit auto executive, opposed the bailout. As the industry was collapsing in the fall of 2008, the former Massachusetts governor predicted in a New York Times op-ed that if the companies received a federal bailout, "you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye." Romney said the companies should have undergone a "managed bankruptcy" that would have avoided a government bailout.

"Whether it was by President Bush or by President Obama, it was the wrong way to go," Romney said at a Republican presidential debate in Michigan in November. Romney said the nation has "capital markets and bankruptcy ? it works in the U.S. The idea of billions of dollars being wasted initially, then finally they adopted the managed bankruptcy. I was among others that said we ought to do that."

Both the Bush and Obama administrations found themselves in uncharted territory in the fall of 2008 and early 2009. GM and Chrysler were on the verge of collapse when Congress failed to approve emergency loans in late 2008. Bush stepped in and signed off on $17.4 billion in loans, requiring the companies to develop restructuring plans under Obama's watch.

The following spring, Obama pumped billions more into GM and Chrysler but forced concessions from industry stakeholders, enabling the companies to go through swift bankruptcies. Obama aides said billions in aid ? about $85 billion for the industry in total ? was necessary because capital markets were essentially frozen at the time, meaning there was no way for GM and Chrysler to fund their bankruptcies privately.

Without any private financing or government support, they argued, the companies would have been forced to liquidate.

Three years later, Obama is trying to turn the tough decision into a political advantage in Ohio and Michigan, which Obama carried in 2008 and where unemployment has fallen of late. During last week's State of the Union address, Obama said the auto industry had hired tens of thousands of workers, and he predicted the Detroit turnaround could take root elsewhere.

Yet Obama's poll numbers in places like Ohio and Michigan remain in dangerous territory, under 50 percent, and the auto industry argument carries some inherent risks.

A Quinnipiac University poll in Ohio released Jan. 18 found Obama locked in a virtual tie with Romney in a hypothetical matchup, with about half the voters disapproving of Obama's performance as president. A poll in Michigan released last week by Lansing-based EPIC-MRA found 48 percent supporting Obama and 40 percent backing Romney in a potential matchup.

Republicans say the bailout still remains unpopular and the government intervention was hardly a cure-all. "The industry was bailed out but a lot of people lost their jobs," said David Doyle, a Michigan-based Republican strategist.

In a nation still soured on bailouts, the government owns more than a quarter of GM. The Treasury Department estimates the government will lose more than $23 billion on the auto bailout: GM is trading at $24 a share, well below the $53-per-share mark needed for the government to recoup its investment in the company.

Romney, facing attacks from Democrats on his work at private equity firm Bain Capital, has tried to use the GM and Chrysler cases to insulate himself against charges his firm gutted companies and fired workers. "How did you do when you were running General Motors as the president?" Romney said in a December debate. "Gee, you closed down factories. You closed down dealerships. And he'll say, well I did that to save the business. Same thing with us, Mr. President."

Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and others say the decision, while unpopular, saved an estimated 1 million jobs throughout the Midwest and say the industry is coming back.

As a result of the restructuring, the companies can make money at far lower U.S. sales volumes than in the past. Industry analysts predict U.S. sales will grow by at least 1 million this year over last year's 12.8 million units as people replace aging cars and trucks. And North American operations at GM, Chrysler and Ford are thriving, boosting their companies' earnings ? all signs that Democrats say will make the difference in the Midwest.

"I don't know how any reasonable person can fail to acknowledge that this rescue plan worked and the country has benefited," said former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, a Democrat.

Light test for laser-guided bullet

Paul Marks, senior technology correspondent

bullet1.jpg(Image: Sandia National Laboratories)

A laser-seeking, self-steering bullet flies through the air, rendered visible by a glowing LED ensconced in its tip. No, it's not that the US military suddenly wants its enemies to see its bullets coming. Instead, its developers needed to test the weapon's in-flight steering electronics, to prove they can cope with the shock of being fired. The fact the LED stayed brightly lit means that the in-bullet circuits did indeed remain unbroken.

Invented by engineers at the US government's Sandia National Laboratories, the self-guided bullet homes in on a laser spot trained on a target from up to 1.4 kilometres away from its firing point. If the target is a moving truck, say, and it moves after the bullet is fired, the laser illumination as seen by a laser sensor in the bullet's nose instructs the bullet to finely twist tiny rudder-like fins on its rear end to keep it on target. The LED test proved that the sensor can remain powered after firing.

In a patent filing, Sandia says: "Computer simulations showed an unguided bullet under real-world conditions could miss a target more than 1,000 metres away by nine metres, but a guided bullet would get within 0.2 metres." You can read more about the specialised bullets here and watch them being fired here.

The challenge the Sandia team faces is making the tech-stuffed bullet cheap enough for everyday use. When stun gun maker Taser International launched a stun cartridge that can be fired from a shotgun, the resulting round, containing a shock battery and control electronics, cost a cool $150 a piece. "If they are going to fire that at a rioting crowd they may as well throw iPods at them," one arms control expert told New Scientist at the time.

World stocks fall ahead of EU summit (AP)

BANGKOK ? Asian stock markets fell Monday, with slower-than-expected growth in the U.S. and uncertainty about a tentative deal to resolve Greece's debt crisis weighing on investor sentiment.

Benchmark oil slipped to near $99 per barrel while the dollar rose against the euro but fell against the yen.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index shed 0.6 percent to 8,789.04. South Korea's Kospi was 1.3 percent lower at 1,939.90 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 0.5 percent to 20,401.32. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.4 percent at 4,272.70.

Benchmarks in Singapore, Indonesia, India and the Philippines also fell. Shares in mainland China were mixed after being closed for a week for Chinese New Year holidays. Taiwan and New Zealand rose.

European leaders were to meet later Monday in Brussels to discuss austerity and belt-tightening measures as well as a tentative deal reached Saturday between Greece and its private investors that could avert a disastrous Greek default on its debt.

If the deal holds and works, it will help prevent a potential shock to the world banking system. But it doesn't resolve the weakening economic conditions in Greece and other European nations as they rein in spending to get their debts under control.

Stan Shamu of IG Markets in Melbourne said that "the Greece debt issues will remain a source of uncertainty and might dampen the risk mood ahead of the EU summit today."

Under the agreement, investors holding 206 billion euros ($272 billion) in Greek bonds would exchange them for bonds with half the face value. The replacement bonds would have a longer maturity and pay a lower interest rate.

The deal would reduce Greece's annual interest expense from about 10 billion euros to about 4 billion euros. When the bonds mature, Greece would have to pay its bondholders only 103 billion euro.

Some analysts said stocks were taking a breather after post-New Year rallies in several markets that were spurred by signs of improvement in the U.S. economy and Europe's debt crisis stabilizing. Hong Kong's Hang Seng, for example, is up more than 11 percent since the beginning of the year. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 is 5.7 percent higher.

"Probably it's a case of the market getting a little bit tired. We've had quite a significant rally now, and that's been based on some news that was mildly encouraging out of Europe," said Ric Spooner, chief market analyst at CMC Markets in Sydney.

"But we may have arrived at a level where the market will need a bit further concrete evidence and news to continue the rally," Spooner said.

Gold-related stocks rose after the precious metal posted a nearly 1 percent gain Friday, as disappointing U.S. economic growth boosted the metal's safe-haven appeal. Lao Feng Xiang Co. Ltd., a major gold retailer, rose 1.1 percent in Shanghai.

Shares of CNK International, a South Korean mineral development company, plunged 14.9 percent after company executives were implicated in a stock manipulation scheme, Yonhap News agency said.

Japan's Mitsubishi Electric Corp. plummeted 13 percent after the Defense Ministry and the Cabinet Satellite Intelligence Center said they would not sign contracts with the electric machinery manufacturer, which acknowledged it had overcharged on defense and space-related projects, Kyodo News agency reported.

On Wall Street, stocks mostly fell Friday after the government said the U.S. economy grew more slowly than expected in the last three months of 2011.

The economy grew at an annual rate of 2.8 percent in the October-December quarter. That was the fastest of 2011 but lower than the 3 percent that economists were looking for.

Traders are awaiting more data this week for clues about which way the U.S. economy is headed. On Wednesday, the Institute for Supply Management will release its manufacturing index for January. The Labor Department will release monthly employment data Friday.

"Because the market has been expecting rather good economic data from the U.S. ... I am afraid if those figures disappoint the market, it may trigger further correction in the stock market," said Louis Wong, dealing director of Phillip Securities Ltd.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 0.6 percent to 12,660.46. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 0.2 percent to 1,316.33. The Nasdaq composite rose 0.4 percent to 2,816.55.

Benchmark oil for March delivery was down 50 cents to $99.06 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 14 cents to end at $99.56 per barrel on the Nymex on Friday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.3179 from $1.3208 late Friday in New York. The dollar fell to 76.67 yen from 76.72 yen.

Cain endorses Gingrich (Politico)

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. ? Herman Cain endorsed Newt Gingrich for president here on Saturday, injecting some energy into the campaign with two days to go until Florida?s primary.

The former presidential candidate and pizza executive called Gingrich the right person to address the ?crisis of leadership in the White House.?

?I hereby officially and enthusiastically endorse Newt Gingrich for president of the United States,? Cain told the cheering crowd here. ?Speaker Gingrich is a patriot. Speaker Gingrich is not afraid of bold ideas,? he said.

?And I also know that Speaker Gingrich is running for president and going through this sausage grinder ? I know what this sausage grinder is all about. I know he is going through this sausage grinder because he cares about the future of the United States of America.?

Gingrich thanked Cain and said he?d be a co-chairman of a commission on ?jobs, economic growth and taxes? should Gingrich become president. He promised that ?this little thing? known as Cain?s 9-9-9 tax plan would be part of the national conversation.

?This is a real job creator who?s actually managed a company,? Gingrich said of Cain. ?He?s going to be a great asset.?

Cain?s endorsement may not provide a major bounce for the former speaker. But it could infuse some energy into a campaign that?s now trailing Mitt Romney in Florida polls after a lackluster debate performance and scathing attack ads against Gingrich by Romney and his super PAC.

Since abandoning his own bid for the Republican nomination ? dogged by allegations of misconduct with women dating to his tenure at the helm of the National Restaurant Association ? Cain is still trying to influence the race.

On the day in December that he dropped out of the race, he announced the launch of a website to show ?the people are still in charge of this country? that would promote his tax plan and other issues he trumpeted during his presidential bid.

Cain had suggested that he would not endorse a presidential candidate, instead offering up an ?unconventional endorsement? of ?the people? who will decide the race.

At a keynote speech of the Southern Republican Leadership Conference, Cain said his endorsement was ?not a candidate seeking the nomination, not someone that?s running.?

?One of the comments that I got most often after I ended my quest for the position of president ? ?Mr. Cain, please keep 9-9-9 alive,?? he said. ?We will, with the 9-9-9 revolution.?

Most recently, Cain?s failed campaign bid became a cause for Comedy Central host Stephen Colbert, who explored a presidential bid as a way to lampoon the political process.

The two appeared at a Charleston, S.C. rally ? billed as the ?Rock Me Like a Herman Cain: South Cain-olina Primary Rally? ? together standing in front of a ?Vote Cain? banner, and Colbert called for the state?s voters to support Cain.

?Herman Cain is an outsider. In fact, he is such an outsider, he?s not even running for president anymore,? Colbert said.

While Cain is determined to play a role in the political process, he?s also a favorite media pundit, appearing on all the major cable networks and giving interviews to a number of print publications.

He will also return to WSB Radio, where he hosted a radio show for five years before leaving to run for president. Cain, according to the network, will provide commentary and political analysis weekdays, and appear as a guest on conservative Neil Boortz?s show.

He will also be an analyst for the station?s coverage of the Republican presidential primary.

Zimbabwe doctors report 800 typhoid cases

HARARE,Zimbabwe (AP) ? An independent doctors' group in Zimbabwe is reporting 800 cases of the bacterial disease typhoid in a recent outbreak.

No deaths have been reported in the past three weeks. The Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights said Sunday that the nation's troubled coalition government lacked urgency in dealing with public health woes.

In a statement, the group said that amid heavy rains clean water supplies were still irregular or "completely absent" in most impoverished townships in Harare. It said burst sewers were left unattended and meat and fish were sold on streets nearby.

A cholera outbreak in 2009 blamed on the collapse of water, sanitation and prevention services in Zimbabwe killed more than 4,000 people.

R Rating Planned for Terminator 5

Expendables 2 with Bieber

Just a week or so ago, action film fans were upset to discover that The Expendables 2 was going to arrive in theaters with a PG-13 rating ? thanks, apparently, to Chuck Norris. Norris was unhappy with the vulgar language in the script and the idea that it would keep some audience members from seeing the film, so Stallone and company decided to go with the more family-friendly PG-13. Fans, expecting a hard R-rating and all the violence it ensures, are now convinced the film will be a compromised and somewhat restrained creation (Stallone says this is untrue, but we?ll have to wait and see).

This is hardly the first time in recent years that a film getting a PG-13 instead of an R rating has upset fans. It seems like a relatively new trend, but horror geeks were displeased when Sam Raimi?s Drag Me to Hell premiered with the lower rating (and many skipped seeing it entirely, convinced it wouldn?t deliver the gory goods) and fans of the Terminator were also vocal in their displeasure when Salvation went for the more commercially viable PG-13.

Those concerned that the planned?fifth Terminator?film would also be stuck with the rating can now breathe easy. Megan Ellison, owner of Annapurna Pictures (the company producing the next installment), has taken to Twitter to tell everyone that the film will return to the series' R-rated roots. Here?s the exchange, with a Terminator fansite, courtesy of the guys at ComicBookMovie.

TheTerminatorFans.com : @meganeellison We hope you can bring this franchise back from the brink of PG-13 HELL!

Megan Ellison : @terminatorfans We can't really tell you guys anything about Terminator BUT it will be an R rated film as God and James Cameron intended.

Speaking of The Expendables 2, some enterprising photoshoppers have used their skills to show us just what a PG-13 version of the film might look like. If you were hoping for more Bieber and Barney the Dinosaur in your action flick, this should thrill you.

Check out a few of our favorites (as well as the new synopsis below) and then swing by JoBlo for the full gallery. Remember kids, stay in school.?

Realizing that kids have a hard time sneaking into R-Rated flicks and that it costs the studio 2.5 trillion dollars when this happens, Barney (Stallone) and his crew meet at the treehouse where they are hired by Bruce Willis to collect his prized stolen GI Joe action figure collection, which was taken by a Belgian karate coach/toy collector (Van Dammage). After getting their permission slips signed they stage a raid at his dojo with Nerf guns, water balloons, and TV-14 swear words and break in to take back the action figures. There, they encounter a disgraced security guard (Schwarzenegger) who will stop at nothing to get a Turbo Man action?shit, wrong movie?who will stop at nothing to keep Barney and friends from getting the figures back. Also, since blood can only be shown in limited quantities (except INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM, which was rated PG and they ripped f*cking hearts out!) they will save a shit-ton of cash in squibs.

Obama officials back bill to hit China subsidies (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama's administration is pressing Congress to restore an important weapon in the U.S. arsenal against subsidized imports from China by quickly passing legislation to undo a recent federal appellate court ruling.

"This matter is of the utmost urgency," U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk and Commerce Secretary John Bryson said in one of several letters they sent to members of Congress. It was dated January 18 and obtained by Reuters on Friday.

"Absent legislation, should the (court) decision become final, Commerce will be required to revoke all CVD orders and terminate all CVD proceedings involving non-market economies," the cabinet officials said.

That list includes "24 existing CVD orders on imports from China and Vietnam, as well as five pending investigations and two recently filed petitions," Bryson and Kirk said.

The ruling could require the Commerce Department to lift or deny duties on some $4.7 billion worth of subsidized imports, mostly from China, they said.

The December 19 court ruling originally was due to take effect shortly after Feb 2. However, the court this week gave the Commerce Department an extension until March 5.

On Wednesday, House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp said he was prepared to move quickly on a "narrowly targeted" bill to ensure the Commerce Department can impose countervailing duties on "non-market economies" like China and Vietnam.

Apple doubles iPhone sales in 1Q (AP)

NEW YORK ? After uncharacteristically tepid sales in the July-to-September quarter, Apple came back with a vengeance in the last three months of 2011, vastly exceeding analyst estimates and setting new records.

Apple Inc. on Tuesday said it sold 37 million iPhones in the quarter, double the figure of the previous quarter and more than twice as many as it sold in the holiday quarter of 2010.

The result may make Apple the world's largest maker of smartphones. Samsung Electronics, which held that position last summer, has said it expects to report shipping about 35 million smartphones in the October to December quarter.

October saw the launch of the iPhone 4S, and the addition of Sprint Nextel Corp. as an iPhone carrier in the U.S.

Apple said net income in the fiscal first quarter was $13.06 billion, or $13.87 per share. That was up 118 percent from $6 billion, or $6.43 per share, a year ago.

Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting earnings of $10.04 per share for the latest quarter, Apple's fiscal first.

Revenue was $46.33 billion, up 73 percent from a year ago. Analysts were expecting $38.9 billion.

The Cupertino, Calif., company shipped 15.4 million iPads in the quarter, again more than doubling sales over the same quarter last year. The November launch of Amazon.com Inc.'s $199 Kindle Fire tablet didn't appear to put a dent in the iPad's sales, as some analysts predicted it would.

Apple shares rose $33.03, or 7.9 percent, to $453.53 in extended trading, after the release of the results.

Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said the company expects earnings of $8.50 per share in the current quarter, and sales of $32.5 billion. Both figures are above the average estimate of analysts polled by FactSet, even though Apple usually low-balls its estimates.

Apple ended the quarter with a cash balance of a staggering $97.6 billion. That's more than enough to buy Citigroup Inc. outright, or issue a special dividend of $100 per Apple share.

For years, investors have been frustrated with Apple's unwillingness to put the cash to use, but complaints have been muted as Apple continues to generate record-breaking results and as the stock price keeps rising. Apple executives have said the cash hoard gives the company flexibility to make acquisitions and long-term supply deals.

If the stock rally in extended trading survives into regular trading Wednesday, Apple will retake the position of most valuable company in the world from Exxon Mobil Corp. Apple first unseated Exxon last summer, and the two have been trading places since then.

Apple's results lifted shares of smaller companies that supply chips for the iPhone, like TriQuint Semiconductor, up 7.7 percent, Cirrus Logic Inc., up 6.8 percent, Broadcom Corp., up 4.2 percent, and Skyworks Solutions Inc., up 3.7 percent.

Apple co-founder and longtime CEO Steve Jobs died Oct. 5, just as the record-breaking quarter started.

Chip Solar House is powered by the sun and controlled through Xbox Kinect (Digital Trends)

Chip-Solar-House-is-powered-by-the-sun-and-controlled-through-Xbox-Kinect

There is a lot that goes into making a house green, and we don?t mean just slapping a coat of paint on it. Building an energy efficient home is hard enough, let alone maintaining a home that doesn?t harm the environment by wasting resources and over consuming energy. Little things like switching off the lights and adjusting the thermostat go a long way in conserving energy, but it isn?t always easy, and it can be difficult fiddling with all of that on a day to day basis. Enter the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arch) and California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and their easy-to-use CHIP Solar House, a cutting-edge solar home you control with a wave of your hands and the help of Xbox Kinect.

CHIP, which stands for Compact, Hyper-Insulated Prototype Solar House utilizes an Xbox Kinect as its means of control. Tasks like turning off the lights or turning down the thermostat can now be accessed through gesture controls. Wave your arm or flick your wrist, it doesn?t matter. CHIP was designed to make maintaining an energy neutral home as streamlined as possible. The house even features a 3-D camera that can go a step further by tracking your movements and auto-switching off a light when you leave a room. Who said being green wasn?t easy?

Of course besides being unique on the inside, the CHIP Solar House also carries with it a distinct look with its insulation stretched around the exterior of the house (resembling the material found on the inside of a padded cell). The house measures 750-square feet and took over two years, more than 100 students, and $1 million to build?however according to SCI-Arch and Caltech, the house could be replicated for as little as $300,000. So while being green might be easy, it isn?t exactly cheap.?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona announced Sunday she intends to resign from Congress this week to concentrate on recovering from wounds suffered in an assassination attempt a little more than a year ago that shook the country.

"I don't remember much from that horrible day, but I will never forget the trust you placed in me to be your voice," the Democratic lawmaker said on a video posted without prior notice on her Facebook page.

"I'm getting better. Every day my spirit is high," she said. "I have more work to do on my recovery. So to do what's best for Arizona, I will step down this week."

Giffords was shot in the head and grievously wounded last January as she was meeting with constituents outside a supermarket in Tucson, Ariz. Her progress had seemed remarkable, to the point that she was able to walk dramatically into the House chamber last August to cast a vote.

Her shooting prompted an agonizing national debate about super-charged rhetoric in political campaigns, although the man charged in the shooting later turned out to be mentally ill.

In Washington, members of Congress were told to pay more attention to their physical security. Legislation was introduced to ban high-capacity ammunition clips, although it never advanced.

Under state law, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer must call a special election to fill out the remainder of Giffords' term, which ends at the end of 2012.

President Barack Obama on Sunday called Giffords "the very best of what public service should be."

"Gabby's cheerful presence will be missed in Washington," Obama said. "But she will remain an inspiration to all whose lives she touched ? myself included. And I'm confident that we haven't seen the last of this extraordinary American."

Vice President Joe Biden said he had spoken with Giffords' husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, and told him "the most important thing is Gabby's recovery."

"I know that Gabby will continue to make significant contributions to her state and country, and I stand with her in whatever endeavor she decides to pursue," Biden said.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said he saluted Giffords "for her service and for the courage and perseverance she has shown in the face of tragedy. She will be missed."

In a statement, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California said that "since the tragic events one year ago, Gabby has been an inspiring symbol of determination and courage to millions of Americans."

Democratic officials had held out hope for months that the congresswoman might recover sufficiently to run for re-election or even become a candidate to replace retiring Republican Sen. Jon Kyl.

The shooting on Jan. 8, 2011, left six people dead, a federal judge and a Giffords aide among them. Twelve others were wounded.

A 23-year-old man, Jared Lee Loughner, has pleaded not guilty to 49 charges in the shooting. He has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and is being forcibly medicated at a Missouri prison facility in an effort by authorities to make him mentally ready for trial.

In the months since she was shot, Giffords, 41, has been treated in Houston as well as Arizona as she re-learned how to walk and speak.

She made a dramatic appearance on the House floor Aug. 2, when she unexpectedly walked in to vote for an increase in the debt limit. Lawmakers from both parties cheered her presence, and she was enveloped in hugs.

More recently, she participated in an observance of the anniversary of the shooting in Arizona.

In "Gabby: A Story of Courage and Hope," a book released last year that she wrote with her husband, she spoke of how much she wanted to get better, regain what she lost and return to Congress.

She delivers the last chapter in her own voice, saying in a single page of short sentences and phrases that everything she does reminds her of that horrible day and that she was grateful to survive.

"I will get stronger. I will return," she wrote.

Giffords was shot in the left side of the brain, the part that controls speech and communication.

Kelly commanded the space shuttle Endeavour on its last mission in May. She watched the launch from Cape Canaveral, Fla.

Kelly, who became a NASA astronaut in 1996 and made four trips into space aboard the space shuttle, retired in October.

Just how much do you trust your spouse or partner? Enough to share passwords? For some, passwords are the final frontier of privacy not only in financial matters, but in social media and email correspondence. But for others, there are no secrets when you're in a relationship?? even risking the potential payback should a break-up sever the happy union.

The New York Times tells us about an "intimate custom" writer Matt Ritchel says is happening between teens in love: "sharing their passwords to email,?Facebook?and other accounts." The desire to be one even extends, the article claims, to couples creating identical passwords and letting each other read private emails and texts.?

For some, it takes a court order to share so much.

But for others, it's imperative to know each other's passwords as part of an open, healthy and fully functioning relationship. Sometimes this comes after a loss of trust, as when one partner has cheated on the other. On the Surviving Infidelity website, where more than 34,000 members have exchanged stories of betrayal and support one another in the forums, there is a saying that becomes a mantra for many of them: "Those who have nothing to hide, hide nothing." To that end, nothing is private anymore in order to facilitate healing for the offended party.?

In this philosophy, those who have been unfaithful should share (or make open and available) not only passwords to their email accounts and Facebook, but also the contents of their text messages, phone logs, work and travel itineraries "without qualms."

Many in those forums mention how finding secret Facebook and email correspondences led to the big reveal of infidelity in their marriages and relationships, and we've seen surveys that attribute at least some fault in Facebook, though an informal poll we took at the end of year showed that nearly half of the 876 votes attributed the demise of their marriages with other factors. But 34 percent did blame Facebook.

Some of the teens in the New York Times article who opened themselves up were dealt a nasty lesson in human nature when their not-so-better halves decided to use the passwords in retaliation for perceived wrongs. The Times listed some examples:

The stories of fallout include a spurned boyfriend in junior high who tries to humiliate his ex-girlfriend by spreading her e-mail secrets; tensions between significant others over scouring each other?s private messages for clues of disloyalty or infidelity; or grabbing a cellphone from a former best friend, unlocking it with a password and sending threatening texts to someone else.

Take our poll and let us know if couples should share passwords.

Financials, Europe debt auctions lift Wall Street (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? U.S. stocks rose early Thursday, putting the S&P on track for its third straight advance after Bank of America and Morgan Stanley earnings lifted financials and strong demand at European bond auctions eased euro zone debt concerns.

Bank of America Corp (BAC.N) climbed 4.4 percent to $7.10 as the top boost to the benchmark S&P. The bank reported a fourth-quarter profit, reversing a year-earlier loss, boosted by one-time items and lower expenses for bad loans.

Fellow financial Morgan Stanley (MS.N) jumped 4.6 percent to $18.15 after the Wall Street bank posted a quarterly loss but still managed to top analysts' expectations.

"It's the reaction to Morgan Stanley and Bank of America, to their earnings reports. People were expecting absolute disaster, it wasn't an absolute disaster and people looked at those numbers and walked away thinking both those companies wouldn't need to raise more capital," said Stephen Massocca, managing director at Wedbush Morgan in San Francisco.

Financial shares have rallied since the start of the year. The S&P financial index (.GSPF) is up 8 percent for 2012, helping to push the S&P 500 up more than 4 percent. The financial index was up 0.8 percent for the session.

But gains were muted as investors showed some cautiousness after a rally that has sent the S&P 500 to levels not seen since late July.

"We are due for at least some consolidation. We had a pretty good rally here and we broke out above the old October high so it's only natural that we get some backing and filling here," said Massocca.

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) rose 28.91 points, or 0.23 percent, at 12,607.86. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) was up 5.33 points, or 0.41 percent, at 1,313.37. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) put on 18.74 points, or 0.68 percent, at 2,788.45.

In a sign that investor nervousness over the euro zone's debt crisis was easing, Spain and France both drew strong demand at government debt auctions.

The Nasdaq got a boost from eBay Inc (EBAY.O), which reported better-than-expected results after the close on Wednesday. The stock was up 4.8 percent to $31.80.

Transportation stocks moved higher after Union Pacific Corp (UNP.N) reported higher quarterly profit and revenue that beat estimates. Union Pacific was up 3.8 percent to $114.02, while the Dow Jones Transportation Average (.DJT) gained 1.4 percent.

New data generally supported the view the U.S. economy continued to improve at a moderate pace. Weekly jobless claims dropped to a near four-year low, consumer prices showed inflation remained in check, while factory activity in the Mid-Atlantic region edged up, but less than expected.

However, housing starts dipped, suggesting the sector was still a ways from strengthening.

After the close, quarterly reports are due from technology bellwethers Google Inc (GOOG.O), International Business Machines Corp (IBM.N), Intel Corp (INTC.O) as well as Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O).

US Finally Backs International Space "Code of Conduct"

Signing a treaty is not enough.

The International Committee of Red Cross http://www.icrc.org/ [icrc.org] conducts large scale games in Switzerland where ICRC's voluntaries work together with school students in the field. One part of students are military, another part is POW (prisoners of war), yet another civilians.

The voluntaries explain students and train them in realistic circumstances (tents, bridges, mountains, etc.) how to keep and question POWs, how to treat civilians during military operations, how to handle wounded, etc. in accordance with the Geneva Convention http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geneva_Conventions [wikipedia.org]

It is a very good approach, because kids and teenagers not only learn the right rules, but also how to stick to them in realistic conditions.

We saw recently many cases how military personnel did not follow the Geneva Convention (to put it mildly), even though a country did sign it. Perhaps, it would be a good idea to teach students at school during such field exercises how to follow it.

Rick vs. Newt: The debate factor

Rick Perry's candidacy failed almost entirely on the weakness of his debate performances, while Newt Gingrich's? is thriving on the strength of his. One problem: a good debater doesn't necessarily make a good president.

I try to be careful not to get into the horse race aspects of things around here, but I thought Gov Perry?s rise and fall was notable in the following sense.

Skip to next paragraph Jared Bernstein

?

Before joining the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities as a senior fellow, Jared was chief economist to Vice President Joseph Biden and executive director of the White House Task Force on the Middle Class. He is a contributor to MSNBC and CNBC and has written numerous books, including 'Crunch: Why Do I Feel So Squeezed?'

Recent posts

It takes a lot to run an effective primary campaign these days, with money and organization and name recognition often at the top of the list.? But you also need to be a good debater.? Gov Perry wasn?t, and his high scores on those other assets failed to offset that by a Texas mile.

Newt, on the other hand, is a sharp debater.? And his lack of those other attributes, e.g., organization, has, at least for now, been largely offset by his debating prowess.

But here?s the thing: does being a good debater make you a good president?? I can?t see that it does.
